Hi, I’m Marjan — welcome to Sort of Baking!
I’m 27, living in Bangladesh, and I own Asparagus Food Island, a cozy seafood restaurant in East Zindabazar, Sylhet. It’s a team effort — with a wonderful manager, chefs, helpers, and everyone who makes the place run so smoothly every day. While I oversee things and love the world of fresh ingredients and feeding people, my real creative spark these days comes from baking at home.
A few years ago, after the restaurant was up and running, two close friends and I got excited about a new idea: opening our own small local bakery. We pictured warm breads, simple pastries, and treats that brighten any day. That dream got me seriously into baking — I started experimenting in my kitchen, reading everything I could, trying recipes over and over, learning from the successes and the flops (there were plenty of those!).
We planned and tested for years, full of hope and ideas. But plans change: one friend moved abroad for work, other things shifted, and the bakery stayed just a dream.
Even though it didn’t happen, baking became something I couldn’t let go of. I kept going — tweaking recipes, figuring out what actually works in a real home kitchen with everyday tools and ingredients, and loving every moment of it. I’m still learning new things all the time, and that’s what makes it so fun.
That’s exactly why I started Sort of Baking: to share the straightforward recipes, real tips, and honest lessons I’ve picked up along the way. Nothing complicated or fancy here — just simple bakes that turn out great, with notes on how to fix things when they don’t (because they won’t always!).
Whenever I feel stuck, I just start from here again. Baking for Beginners: A Simple Home Baking Guide
(And yes, I’m also a freelance front-end web developer, so designing and building this little space myself has been another kind of creative adventure.)
Whether you’re just starting out, baking for family, or want something easy and reliable after a busy day, I’m so glad you’re here. This is a no-pressure spot to learn together, try new things, and enjoy the process.
I’d love to hear from you — drop a comment on any recipe, share your own bakes, or let me know what you’d like to see next. Let’s keep baking, learning, and keeping it simple!
With flour on my hands and a smile,
Marjan
